My design and print work is most often derived from my countless photos and day-to-day observations of pattern, structure and light, the complexity of which is translated onto fabric and paper. With a BA in Art & Design from Camberwell College of Arts and an MA in Graphic Design from the Royal College of Art, my strongest work falls at the crossroads between art and design. Living in Tokyo for over six years from 2001, I worked as a freelance photographer and video artist for exhibitions and events. Alongside raising a family, I then relocated to California in 2007, developing my own work as an artist and designer through collaborations and exhibitions, with a particular interest in textiles and print. My practice has been hugely inspired by my time living abroad; the traditional craftsmanship and attention to detail in Japan, combined with the sunlight and mid century modern architecture and style in California. Always observing, photography is a key tool in my creative process; my eye for composition and continual curiosity around the beauty in the mundane has led to explorations into light, colour, structure and juxtaposition in various media. The designs are a playful take on the shapes, texture and colour found within the mid-century modern Eichler home in which they were exhibited; modernist wooden panelled walls, globe ceiling lights, interspersed with brightly coloured furniture and the odd children’s toy. Reconnecting in Palo Alto, California, after two decades of each living in different parts of the world and several years of domestic preoccupation, Project #2293 was born out of many conversations Martha, Christina and I had about how to produce and share some work again. This site-specific exhibition, held in a mid-century Californian suburban home (house number 2293), explores themes around suburban life, architecture, domesticity and identity, as seen from three different angles. November 2018 Artist Martha Sakellariou conceived the idea of ‘Plat du Jour, a culinary action Part-I’, as a 24hr art event that explored themes around food, home, domesticity and identity. This site-specific installation was set up in a residential home and included works in various forms: video, artists’s books, prints, writings, live readings, cooking, an edible book and food sculpture. The event and exhibits were centred around a communal dinner, reflecting how food is not only embedded in our daily domestic lives but also as a social necessity. I worked closely with Martha on the organisation, research and production for the event. I designed and exhibited a piece entitled ‘Compositions in Flour’, a book of photographs that I took conjuring up a form of escapism through flour as a raw material. I also collaborated with Martha Sakellariou on a limited edition edible book entitled ‘23 Stories for Plat du Jour’. I designed and laid out a compilation of twenty three anecdotal stories by writer Jennifer Lee that revealed small but significant moments in her life that involved food. This was printed in edible ink on rice paper, 100% consumable. It’s a fun and intriguing idea, having site specific fabrics in your home that are derived from the very structure around you. The print was produced in two colour-ways, a midnight blue on a yellow ochre and a black on white. The central circle represents a hanging globe ceiling light from the kitchen area, the wood-textured shapes are derived from the structural interior and wood-panelled walls of the room, the black rectangular shape reflects the darkened corridor beyond. In contrast, the pop of a red Eames chair-back! I was interested in exploring the idea of atmosphere through abstraction and how you could represent the architecture, as well as the feeling and warmth of a home through seemingly disparate abstract elements. These were fundraising events for our local schools, and each workshop was adapted to suit the specific age group. Using rubber stamps, scratch foam and iron-on transfers on paper and fabric, we encouraged experimentation and play. The participants created fun printed tote bags and seasonal wrapping paper. Power of Pattern Intersession, 2017 A one week ‘Intersession’ workshop in collaboration with graphic designer Susi Mehar at the Girls’ Middle School in Palo Alto, California. Susi and I designed this course to explore the beauty of pattern, a subject we are both passionate about! The students worked through daily exercises interspersed with regular discussion and critiques. December 2018 - March 2019 Three month Artist Residency, Rotating Artist Studio, Cubberley Artist Studio Program (CASP) The Cubberley Artist Studio Program (CASP) supports the vitality of the arts in the city of Palo Alto by providing City-sponsored, affordable studio spaces for artists, building on creative community and fostering public engagement with the arts and artists. My proposal was to use this space for the ongoing visual enquiry into the common themes of my work: the abstraction of shape, colour, pattern, light and structure. Exploring the tension between artistic representation and the graphic form, and allowing dedicated time and space to experiment, discover, document, connect and share my process. The residency happened to coincide with some consuming challenges in my life, and so I found myself using the studio as a form of escape, where I gave myself permission to play creatively as more of a mindful process, rather than aiming for any ‘finished’ work. This consisted of local walks, taking photos and simply playing with paper and composition in the studio. I unofficially called this process ‘Alternative Therapy’ and for the first time I fully acknowledged and utilised the power of creative play as a huge mental benefit.
